receive the complete information packet of how you can
start making money right away online. Why aren't they
sharing this wonderful information with family and close
friends so they can have an entire family of wealthy
relatives? Why are they offering this great opportunity to
complete strangers? One possible reason could be that their
family and friends had already been suckered into their
last get-rich 'quick scheme.

One of the most prolific scams online today is signing up
to be a secret shopper. There are many companies that do
use secret shoppers to visit stores and restaurants for
them, and turn in a review to the company that informs them
of how a particular unit is performing, but to claim that a
company can set you up with many companies where you will

Yes, these companies have the names and addresses of the
companies that use secret shoppers and that is all you will
be getting. Once you send in your payment, which can varies
from $19.95 to $39.95; you will receive a list of companies
that use secret shoppers and instructions on how to fill
out these companies online applications. If the company is
looking for more shoppers they might contact you for a
future interview. Most of these offers carry no guarantee
that you will ever be chosen to be a secret shopper, let
alone get paid $40 an hour for going to a restaurant or any
kind of store.

For years I have taken the lazy man's approach to tracking
what is going on in my marketing efforts on the Internet.
For me I mostly just sent my traffic to my homepage and was
satisfied to see my newsletter subscribers and my income
increase on a regular basis.

Testing and tracking was something I did not want to be
bothered with. So how important is testing out your
marketing strategy to your overall success?

I would put testing into a couple of different categories.

1. One common sense thing is, whenever you make changes to
your website, blog, landing page, and so on, you should be
testing everything to make sure you did not make mistakes.
If you are like me you are going to type in the wrong url,
send a subscriber to the wrong autoresponder address, or
maybe even not get the subscriber at all.

Therefore, common sense is that you check every link on
every page, and you go through the total sign up process if
you are trying to capture names for future follow. Let
yourself be the guinea pig, not your valuable customers.

You will probably be surprised at how many mistakes you
find. Even the most conscientious Internet marketers can
have typing errors that lead to traffic being sent to error
pages as opposed to the page you want them on.

2. Another simple thing you can do is track which landing
pages draw the best. You could create three different
landing pages and monitor which one is drawing the best.
You can also create different landing pages for different
article directories and see which one is giving you the
most clicks.

If you want to get more serious about testing you really
should add a simple Google analytics script on every
webpage on your site. Include this on your blog homepage as
well as your single pages. It is amazing how much you can
learn about your traffic from reading the Google analytics
reports.

Today the Internet is becoming so competitive that not
finding out what is working in your marketing efforts is a

I've had a great response to my earlier article introducing
this subject - so here's the next in a series of "How To"
articles aimed at those of us who are (probably) from the
older generation, but who are intimidated by technology. We
don't have the confidence of youth, and are understandably
nervous of doing something wrong, which might be difficult
to retrieve!

Don't be afraid - you're not alone, and very little is
totally irretrievable. A good idea is to keep a little
notebook to jot down tips and techniques which you might
otherwise forget or lose! When I started my online business
not long ago, I had no idea of how to get onto the internet
- and the limit of my technological expertise was sending
an e-mail. The experts, especially the younger ones have no
idea of what it's like to be intimidated by a computer -
but I've been there, still am there, but to a lesser extent.

I took the precaution of jotting down the important tips
that I was given to help overcome technical problems - so
I'll share these with you, with the hope that you'll work
your way through these minor hassles, to establishing your
own top home-based business.

Running an internet business from home involves key
communications by e-mail. It's vital that you are able to
keep (and find!) important communications when you need
them.

Most of us have a home e-mail address, and the best tip
I've had was to open one of the free accounts available.
This will keep your private mail uncluttered, and also
saves space on your hard-drive, as there will be plenty of
information you'll want to keep, and refer back to. You are
provided with more than 7000mb of space, which should last
you a good long time.

I'm limited by spam rules for article writing, so I'm not
allowed to use names which might be construed as
advertising. I've used the free e-mail facility offered by
one of the largest search engines. There are others
available and I'm sure the principles are basically the
same.

1) You'll need to open an account to start with. Open your
Browser and type in "Free e-mail account" and you'll be
offered a range of links. Pick one that is going to help
you to open your account and click on the link at the top.

2) You'll need to give your current e-mail address. This is
the key to opening your account every day - so remember
this.

3) You'll be asked to provide a password. If your choice is
unsuitable you will have to think of another which has the
correct components. (Make a note of these two points - so
that you can sign in and open your account each time.)
You'd be wise to keep details of your user name and
password for each programme you sign up for - it's very
easy to forget which one you have used - and there'll be
plenty to remember!

3) There will be a word verification to complete, and you
can open your account once you've read the Terms of Service.

4) Go to your account and click on the e-mail icon. Think
of an address for your business e-mail communications.
Again, the system will guide you and make suggestions for a
name that is available. A couple of clicks and you're in
business!

Take some time to read the "Getting Started" guide. There's
an excellent system for Archiving your messages under
different Labels. Follow the instructions carefully - and
this will provide you with a simple means of filing your
messages for easy reference. Keeping your communications up
to date and accessible, will move you a step closer to
establishing your top home-based business.
